A partnership of the National Park Service and the United States Forest Service.

What is SierraWild.Gov?

This site is a joint effort of the US Forest Service, National Park Service, and Bureau of Land Management. These three agencies manage the more than two dozen designated wilderness areas along the spine of the Sierra Nevada.

With so many areas, agencies, policies, and managers, things can get confusing. This site aims to help you find what you’re looking for: everything from what bear canisters are allowed in Yosemite to how to reserve a permit for Mt Whitney.

Our Mission:

Foster awareness of, knowledge about, and passion for designated wilderness areas in the Sierra Nevada.

  • Provide current information about wilderness areas throughout the Sierra Nevada.
  • Help visitors plan their next wilderness visit, from brainstorming where to go, to packing a bear resistant canister.
  • Educate the public on how to enjoy wilderness responsibly.
  • Inspire all people to experience the wonder of the Sierra Nevada’s wilderness areas.
